Bhuta Yadnya Helps Us Live in Harmony with Nature

Bhuta Yadnya, or offerings to spirits and the universe, is performed to maintain balance, ensuring harmony and peace in human life and the surrounding environment. Bhuta refers to both unseen spiritual entities (niskala) and visible elements of the universe (sekala) such as animals and plants. This practice emphasizes environmental stewardship, including proper waste disposal.

In ceremonial practice, Bhuta Yadnya includes rituals like Tawur Agung Kesanga, Tumpek Kandang, Tumpek Pengarah, and Mecaru. These rituals are aimed at purification and maintaining harmony within the cosmos.

Have you heard of the procession of ogoh-ogoh the day before Nyepi? Before the ogoh-ogoh parade, there is a ceremony called Tawur Agung Kesanga (part of the Nyepi ritual) to cleanse the Bhuana Agung (universe) and Buana Alit (human self) from negativity and to preserve harmony. Ogoh-ogoh itself symbolizes Bhuta Kala, which is later burned as a symbol of eliminating negativity.
